A Wintry Week in December (12/12-12-16)

Happy Monday parents! Hope you had a great weekend with your family and stayed warm during our snowy morning yesterday. Christmas break is quickly approaching which means we have a lot to fit in in these last two weeks. Please take a look at what will be happening in fourth grade.

Math - The students continue to work through Unit 4 which is on the various methods of multiplication. This unit will be coming to an end next week which means that your child will have their test. A study guide will be sent home on Wednesday evening and will be optional, but if it is completed, it will be two extra credit points on their test.

Science - The students will be starting their new Science unit today on adaptations and patterns. This unit focuses on classification of plants and animals and how theses species learn to adapt and survive in their environments.

Reading- The students are learning about challenging parts in nonfiction texts. We've read articles that are considered hybrids. That means the article mixes narrative (story) text with expository (informational) text to help you learn about a topic.  The students will also be learning how to tackle tough new vocabulary by looking in the word (prefixes, suffixes) and around the word (context clues).  Next week we will begin a class research project.

Writing- Many students have begun publishing their personal essays. They are editing by checking for correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.  The essay is due to Google Classroom by Friday, Dec. 16th.  We will begin persuasive essays next week.

Social Studies- There is a Pennsylvania Regions Quiz on Wed, Dec. 14th.  The students will be allowed to use their notes and their textbooks.  No studying is required.

Word Work- Tic Tac Toe homework is due next Day 6, Dec. 20th!

Vocabulary- We have found some really interesting words while reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The Word of the Day Quiz is this Wednesday the 14th

Upcoming Dates:

December 24-January 2nd: Christmas Break!

Back For a Short Week (11/29-12/02)

Hello parents! We hope that everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving! We are gearing up for these next couple of weeks before Christmas break with a lot to get accomplish. Please take a look at what will be happening this week in fourth grade.

Math: The students started a new unit in math this week which focuses on different methods of multiplication. Students will be learning how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers in this unit. I will be teaching them the traditional way of multiplying along with other ways. I will encourage the students to use whichever method is easier for them to find their answer. If you would like me to send home extra practice of this to help your child, please let me know.

Science: We continue to work through our unit on Earth's water. This week we will be focusing specifically on instruments that we use to measure the different components of weather. Their unit test will be coming up next Friday! Please look out for a study guide that will be sent home next week.

Reading: Identifying Nonfiction text structure is important because it helps us determine the most important details in the text.  The students are reading articles with various text structures (problem/solution, cause & effect, sequence, and comparison) and filled in graphic organizers with important information.

Writing: Our opinion essays are coming along! We continue to add evidence for each of our reasons supporting the thesis.  Soon we will develop strong introductions and concluding paragraphs for the essays.

Word Work: New word sorts were not handed out due to the holiday break.  New word sorts will be given out on Monday and Tuesday. Therefore, Tic Tac Toe Homework is due Monday, Dec. 12th.

Social Studies: How did the Native Americans contribute to our land in Pennsylvania?

* Due to the short week and recent Holiday break we did not send home Thursday check-ins. We will continue this routine next week.
