Hello parents! I hope that you all had a fantastic weekend. Please do not forget to sign up for Parent Teacher conferences which are coming up at the end of November. It is a first come, first serve basis and the spots fill up quickly! Take a look at what is happening this week in fourth grade:
Math: Unit 2 will be coming to end this week in math which means they will have their unit test. Their test will be given on Thursday and a study guide will be sent home on Wednesday. If they complete their study guide, it is worth two extra credit points on their test, but they do not have to do it.
Science: We continue to work through our unit on Earth's Water. The students will be learning about the different water sources and their different characteristics. We will also be having a short quiz this Friday on the content they have learned so far in the unit. They will be completing a study guide on Wednesday that they can take home and study Wednesday and Thursday night. Please look out for this coming home!
Reading: We are learning how to make interpretations about what we are reading. Students are synthesizing skills to identify story elements and use those elements to come up with a theme. Please continue to read at home and fill out the reading log! Reading everyday is extremely important in order for your child to become a better reader.
Writing: We continue to publish our realistic fiction stories this week. The students are doing a great job with publishing like real authors! Once they turn in their finished work to Ms. Duke's Google Classroom page they are free to start the writing process over with a new story of their choice. We will pay close attention to conventions and grammar as we write throughout the day.
Word Work: New word sorts have been given out. Tic Tac Toe Homework will be due next Day 6, Oct. 21st!

Last Full Week in September (09/26-09/30)
Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for the first full week of Fall and the beautiful weather that comes with it. Please take a minute to see what is happening in your child's classes this week:
Math: We will start Unit 2 this week, which focuses on multiplication and geometry concepts. A new homework packet will be sent home today, and your child should hold onto this throughout unit 2. Homework will continue to be Monday-Thursday. Have your child continue to practice their fact fluency.
Science: We will also be starting a new unit in Science on the Solar System with a focus on how the Sun, Moon, and Earth interact with one another and how revolution and rotation works. This unit is short and will only last about two weeks. Their unit test will be next Friday, so please look out for a study guide that will be sent home next Thursday.
Reading: The students are learning how complex fiction characters can be. They are citing evidence to support different ideas about the character in their fiction books. They are paying attention to how the character acts, what patterns show up, how they change, and what their personality is like.
Please be sure your child is filling out the blue reading log every night! They are checked each Thursday. Students who have a completed reading log at the end of each month will get a special prize!
Writing: We are revising their realistic fiction stories. The students will use different "lenses" to fix up their work. They may revise by thinking about better and more interesting words to use, or check that their character is believable. We are also making sure that we are using dialogue correctly and describing the setting in each scene. They will use a revising checklist on their own, and then use one with a partner.
Word Work: Tic Tac Toe Homework was due today since it is Day 6. If students do not want to have to do their homework over the weekend I am encouraging them to do the 3 activities earlier in the cycle week. When students do not turn in their homework on time they lose a classroom dollar and then have to make up that work during recess. New sorts will be given out Tuesday and the homework will be due on Oct. 4th. Please encourage your child to keep the word sorts in the envelope and in the binder. When they get lost they have to pay a school dollar to get a new word sort.
Vocabulary: We almost have 10 interesting words on our Word of the Day sheet! We will be reviewing these words on Wednesday and there will be a quiz on Thursday! The students will choose the appropriate interesting words from a word bank to complete 10 sentences.
Social Studies: We begin Map Skills on Wednesday!
Upcoming Dates:
September 29th: Mazie Gable Clothing Drive @ 4:30
October 5th: Wear all the same color day!

What's happening in this four day week? (09/06-09/09)
Happy Tuesday parents! We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. I spent a lot of time outside and with my family all weekend long and I loved every minute of it. Please take a look at what is happening this week in fourth grade:
Math - We continue to work through Unit 1 which concentrates on the importance of place value. This week the students will be learning about multi-digit addition and subtraction which will be the primary focus on their homework. Please encourage them to try their hardest to complete their homework and if you are interested in me sending home more for your students to practice, please reach out on the Remind App. Also, always remember there is no homework on Fridays!
Science - Today, we will start our unit on Matter and its different properties. Students will be learning through hands-on experiences. This is a very short unit and the unit test will be upon us at the end of the month. Please keep on the lookout for a study guide that I will send home.
Reading- This week we are learning to give a retelling of our chapter books by chronology. We are also practicing synthesizing our retelling by including previous events that happened in the book with the more recent events. Next we will work on putting ourselves in our books by envisioning. A Home Reading Log has been placed in the students' binders. Please be sure to initial this sheet each night. Students should be reading at least 15 minutes every night (Mon-Fri). The September Home Reading Log is on a blue sheet. It should remain in their binders so it can be checked each day.
Writing- The students have been developing main characters for their realistic fiction narratives. These characters have specific external and internal traits, as well as motivations and struggles. We will begin creating scenes from our stories that show us the characters' motivations and struggles. Then we will be planning our story plots using a story arc. Interesting stories have lots of problems throughout!
Word Work- Our individualized word sorts will be distributed by Wednesday and placed in envelopes. Please be sure that these sorts remain in their binders so they come back to school each day. We will begin our weekly activities on the next Day 1. Tic Tac Toe homework will be due the following Day 6 (September 16th).
Vocabulary- During our read aloud time the students are capturing interesting words by writing them down in their Word Collectors. We will use some of these words to expand our vocabulary. Very soon we will begin our Word of the Day activity.
